Chiropractic Treatment for Ear Infections

Each year, there are over ten million cases of ear problems. Topping the cases of ear problems are ear infections or otitis media in babies and young children. It is also the top reason for pediatric visits. Ear infections account for more than a third of all pediatric visits.

Almost fifty percent of all children will be afflicted with ear infection at least once before they turn one year. Two-thirds of these children will have at least one episode of ear infection before they are three years of age.

The cause of otitis media can be viral or bacterial and often occurs with other illnesses such as a common cold and upper respiratory infections. Many cases are chronic, needing treatment every time it recurs. The child risks hearing damage and speech and associated developmental problems.

The standard conventional treatment for most cases of ear infection is with antibiotics, which may or may not be effective depending on the cause of the infection. If bacteria is the culprit, antibiotics may work, but it will obviously not work when the infection is viral in origin. According to numerous research studies, the body’s innate immune system is often much more effective than antibiotics. Also, repeated use or overuse of antibiotics can lead to strains of drug-resistant bacteria that will render the antibiotics useless while your child’s suffering continues.

Surgery to treat ear infections, the last recourse in the medical treatment of ear infections, is very high in the list of the reasons for surgery in children below two years old. It ranks second only to circumcision. Myringotomy is the surgical procedure employed to clear excessive fluids from the middle ear. In this procedure, a tiny hole is made in the eardrum, wherein a tube is inserted to be able to suck out the fluids, prevent further fluid build up and help to ventilate the middle ear. This treatment is effective, but in 20 to 30 percent of all myringotomy cases, the surgery has to be repeated. General anesthesia is required in the surgery; the last thing parents would want their children to experience very early in their life.

Chiropractic Treatment for Ear Infections

With the disadvantages of traditional treatment options for ear infections, more parents are considering a more natural, drug-free and non-invasive method of treatment like chiropractic. A research published by Joan Fallon, Doctor of Chiropractic from New York, showed the satisfactory results to children with chronic ear infections who were subjected to chiropractic treatment. In the study, 80 percent of the children who received chiropractic treatments were healed and became free of ear infections for six months or longer after their first chiropractor visit. Maintenance treatments were provided by the chiropractor every four to six weeks after the initial visit.

Dr. Fallon, who received worldwide acclaim for her successful study, highlighted that chiropractic treatment mobilized drainage of the ear among the children treated. They continued to be able to drain without fluid build up and further infection. Children were observed to have built up their antibodies and healed in a very short period of time.

In the treatment of ear infections in children, as well as in many other conditions, the results with chiropractic continues to prove that it is an effective natural technique that brings about the body’s amazing self healing potential when its functions are restored.
